WELCOME TO SILVER CUP RACINGThe Silver Cup series was started in 1991 to accommodate the overflow from the extremely popular Ultimoil sponsored Super Cup Challenge. In 1992 it was decided that Silver Cup be run as a series in its own right, with the modifications to vehicles virtually unlimited and the only restriction would be that the cars have to run on locally manufactured passenger car tyres. The series was run at the old Zwartkops raceway as a Club championship with backing from Ultimoil until the end of 1994. With the series growing rapidly certain rule changes and Class divisions were implemented but still retaining the basic tyre ruling! In 1995 the series became the Continental Silver Cup Challenge with support coming from Continental tyres. With the imminent closure of Zwartkops the Silver Cup Racing Club was formed in 1997 to ensure that the series would continue at other Inland tracks. The main objective of SCRC was to create and maintain a relatively low budget saloon car series which brings motor racing within the reach of the average enthusiast irrespective of race, creed or gender without breaking the household budget and enjoyment being the key factor. A new points scoring system was introduced which enables any competitor to win the overall Championship irrespective of what class they may compete in. This approach proved to be very successful and has made Silver Cup one of the most successful club formulas in motor racing. Continental tyres sponsored the series until the end of 2000 when they decided to concentrate their efforts on National categories thus ending a successful 6 year relationship. The series has continued to flourish despite not having had a Series Sponsor since 2000 and Silver Cup through the efforts and dedication of the Committee and members is still hugely successful and popular even though it is an uphill battle to supply Trophies, regalia etc without the financial assistance of a Sponsor. Silver Cup rules and point scoring systems have been consistent for nearly 15 years and this has probably been one of the biggest contributing factors towards its success over the years - no cars ( or drivers for that matter) are too old or too modified to compete and the Rand to fun ratio remains the most important! 2008 saw CHANA SA joining the Silver Cup Challenge as a major partner. 2011 sees Spitronics Micro Ignitions joining the Silver Cup Challenge as a major partner in the way forward and we look forward to a rewarding and mutually beneficial partnership with them. WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SILVER CUP RACING!Ryan Zwankhuizen Chairperson Silver Cup Racing Club |
